Notes from an occupied territory

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 8:42 PM
Well, it was certainly strange today.

The managers all huddled in a conference room with their laptops and the people from the FDIC and purchasing bank, figuring out how to close the books on Amtrust.

Meanwhile, the employees gathered in furtive clumps of angsty gossip and traded rumors and jobhunting ideas.

Many projects which were high priority, urgent matters on Friday had been completely canceled today, so while some people were scrambling to put together information and changes needed for the transition, others had little to do except speculate on the future with each other.

In the breakroom, there was free pop, and stale donut holes.

The Cal Leandros Spongebob Vendetta

  • Dec. 7th, 2009 at 5:56 PM
Many may be unaware that there has been a long-standing feud between Cal and Spongebob. There was a bathtub, some soap, and perhaps a starfish flushed down the toilet. Cal was five...cut him some slack. But NO. Spongebob will not let it go. Seventeen years later he still haunts the sewers (and equally damp places) in search of his vengeance. ThePinkEgoBox was fortunate enough to have caught a picture of this grim and bitter vendetta in action.

Thanks to Heather and Anaquana and anonymous for the X-mas pressies! Good stuff! If anyone else is overcome with the need to give me something (besides Seth Green), consider my favorite rescue (look to the right column for Northern Lights) and perhaps donate a buck or two to them (they have paypal.) They at most times board or foster close to 80 dogs to save them from death at the shelters, not to mention the expensive surgeries (as my sponsor dog Jonah required). The abandoned, abused, and lost, no one will ever appreciate your gift more.

Dakota (in my icon) is alive because of that organization. He was on his last day when they sent me racing to pull him from the kill shelter. Now he's senile and shedding like a Yeti, but worth every second of it.

Thinking about the takeover...

...suddenly brings to mind the episode of Angel where the Beast decimates Wolfram and Hart and Lilah flees through a secret passage in a janitor's closet and hides out in the sewers.

Yeah. I kinda expect to go to work Monday and have to dodge zombies.

Seized and given away

  • Dec. 5th, 2009 at 11:24 AM
http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2009/12/amtrust_bank_fails_bought_by_n.html

My bank has been seized by the FDIC and given away *for free* to a bank in New York.

Gosh, if I knew they were giving it away free, I'd have asked for it myself.:-)

This is probably OK for me. Since they have no local presence, they will probably keep most employees below managerial level.

Never been so glad not to have an office!

News on the Rialto

We've likely been bought....but by who and to what ends?

Right Before the Dawn

  • Dec. 3rd, 2009 at 7:21 AM
So, two days ago the parent corporation of my bank declared chapter 11. This does not directly affect my bank--banks can't declare bankruptcy--it just protects the owners in case something like government seizure happens to the bank.

Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal published that an unnamed inside source says that the FDIC was holding a very quiet auction for our bank last week amongst eligible institutions, and that bids closed last wednesday.

There is so much nervous stress in the air at work, you can barely breathe, but none of the above has to mean we are losing our jobs. It probably means somebody else will sign the paychecks.

Still, I'm a bit of a wreck.

Rumors make me cranky

  • Nov. 30th, 2009 at 8:51 PM
So, our bank posted wretched numbers in our FDIC report for last quarter, and the rumors are flying fast around the cubes. And frankly most of the rumors are neither plausible nor interesting in the slightest. The government saw the report months before we did--if they were going to ace us, it would probably already be done.

However, in case of necessity, I am developing a plan B. I'm thinking mob boss, a position which the AP assures me is now open to women, writer of supernatural lesbian porn, or costumed crime fighter. But not in spandex. More like The Shadow.
